Sony X80J: our review (X81J)

The Sony X81JAEP is a low-end 2021 model. The resolution is 4K as in "all" the TVs of this year. The panel is IPS (ADS) that offers wide viewing angles at the cost of losing depth of blacks, if you turn off the lights the blacks look gray. The panel is DirectLED with native 50Hz and although it is compatible with "all" HDR formats the panel is 8bits. The processor is not the best of Sony, but it works really well: 4K HDR Processor X1. The GoogleTV is good, it is already at the height of the Smart platforms of Samsung or LG, but it is not our favorite. They do not have HDMI 2.1, available from the X85J, the top model. The Sony X82J is almost identical, the main difference is aesthetics, with another type of base. Also I have 400Hz of MotionFlow instead of 200Hz.

Our opinion Sony X80J (veredict):

Our opinion on the Sony X81J is not very good, it is a low-end TV but Sony is usually a relatively expensive brand. This TV mounts an IPS DirectLED panel with native 50Hz, low-end specifications although it does not mean that it is a bad TV, it is what it is and our most outstanding drawback is the price since paying for "the quality" that Sony offers us in the low-end does not seem like the best option. It is a TV suitable for large living rooms or for those with sofas on the sides due to its good viewing angle, on the contrary it is not the most suitable TV for watching movies. If you are looking for a TV with these characteristics, we prefer to look at some "economic" LG that offers us the same benefits at a lower price: for example the LG UP80006.

Sony A80J: the most recommended OLED 2021? (A84J)

Sony A80J / A84J is an excellent 2021 OLED TV. Sony has launched this year an OLED panel with GoogleTV as a Smart platform and with HDMI 2.1 ports prepared for true gamers. The A80J offers 4K resolution and a powerful image processor that handles low-quality content well. The HDR formats that it allows with: HDR10, DolbyVision and HLG. The OLED panel offers the blackest blacks and an unbeatable viewing angle, making it a suitable TV for all uses and for any situation in the room, even if the sun shines directly on the screen (not recommended) or it is a Very sunny room may lack a bit of maximum brightness. As for the sound system, it has Acoustic Surface Audio +: the sound comes directly from the screen, with actuators behind the TV that vibrate.

Our opinion Sony A80J (veredict):

Our opinion about the Sony A80J is very good, we are in front of some of the best televisions of the moment. 4K resolution and a good Smart platform. OLED screens are for us the best of the best, even if they don't have as much brightness as Samsung's best QLEDs. The audio is one of the best in current televisions, although we always recommend buying an external audio system if you are going to buy a £2000 TV. The price that we recommend as a reference is about £1500 in 55 inches, so you must wait for the price to drop or get a good deal. The only question that arises is whether to spend more on the older brother Sony A90J or if the LG C1 OLED is better, which we also recommend a little more for gamers. In conclusion, you are buying the Sony A80J this year 2021, you are not making a mistake.

The Sony X90J is a high-end TV, without reaching the Top, 2021. This is for us one of the best quality-price televisions that you can buy. As technical characteristics they have everything we ask for: Native 100Hz FullArray panel, VA technology, good Smart platform (AndroidTV). The Sony X90J and its variants: X92J, X93J and X94J, are prepared for gamers with HDMI 2.1 ports and low input lag. For home theater lovers the image is good, a contrast of the best (leaving OLEDs aside) and deep blacks even in bright conditions. The maximum brightness peak is also sufficient to reproduce the best HDR contents: HDR 10, Dolby Vision, HLG. Sound more than enough for many, but we recommend external audio equipment to set up a home theater.

Our opinion Sony X90J (veredict):

Our opinion about the Sony X90J is very good, for us it is the best without entering the top range of OLED or QLED from Samsung. This is one of the best TVs in value for money just like the 2020 XH9096 model. This TV is better in contrast, with deeper blacks, better for cinema and better brightness to improve HDR quality content, on the other hand, the color palette is one point lower than the 2020 model. 4K quality works very well so it is a TV for all uses, even gamers. The only point for which we can discourage this TV is if you are going to see it from the sides since it loses quality if we do not see it more or less from the front.

Sony XH9005: Best TV 2020 gamers

The Sony XH9005 is a 2020 high-end TV at a moderate price. This television is a more modest option than the XH95 series although it maintains the FullArray panel (FALD), with but viewing angle but better contrast. The Sony XH9005 supports Dolby Vision and HDR in 4K resolution. The X1 graphics processor is not the best of Sony 2020 that integrates the best 2020 televisions. The Smart platform works with Android and supports the voice control of the Google Assistant, which is fine but still does not reach the level of Samsung's Smart. The audio system is better than the competition, Sony has bet heavily on this aspect, although it is far from the external Audio systems. The HDMI port is prepared to update it to HDMI 2.1, making this series the best for gamers.

Our opinion Sony XH9005 (veredict):

Our opinion of the XH9005 is very good, its price is less than its value: both in terms of features and image quality. What we highlight the most is its excellent contrast ratio and panel uniformity and good local attenuation. The but as we have already said the viewing angle. It is an excellent TV for watching movies in the dark, such as everyday TV and especially thanks to its low response time (inputlag) and the HDMI 2.1 port make it the ideal TV for the new generation of consoles. In short, we are talking about perhaps the best TV that can be bought for around ‎£1,200 or less if you find it on sale. Comparison Sony XH8096 vs XH8596

The difference between the Sony XH8096 and Sony XH8505 televisions is small, it is mainly based on the native frequency of the panel, which allows you to see fast-moving images such as video games or action movies without the need to "interleave" made-up images "to make more fluid movement that can cause the image's brightness and colors to darken.

Our opinion on the Sony XH8505 is not bad but it is not good either, there are aspects that we like like the 100Hz panel and others like the price that throw us back. The truth is a good TV of 43 or 49 inches, for a bright and spacious living room thanks to its good viewing angle. Because of the price issue, we are not convinced that it is worth what it costs, Sony is usually a bit expensive brand in general and the best option is to wait a few months for this 2020 model to drop in price or look for another brand like LG with a similar IPS panel. but cheaper.

Sony XH9505: Our advice on Sony's best 4K LED 2020

The Sony XH9505 is Sony's best 4K TV, leaving OLEDs aside. It is an excellent television. The FALD panel offers good uniformity and deep blacks with 60? control zones. Furthermore, the X-Wide Angle filter offers better viewing angles than typical VA panels. The panel is of course native 10bit and 100Hz, like all TVs in these categories. The X1 Ultimate processor excellently processes lower quality images and achieves good rescaling. The screen sizes start at 49 inches, this being a little lower in Audio since it does not include the Acustic Multi Audio or integrated microphone, in addition from 55 inches they include the backlit remote control and the design of the bezel is also different. The connectors are fine and the Smart Android platform works well, increasingly wide.

Our opinion on the XH9505 is very good, it is an excellent 4K TV, the best (not OLED) from Sony for this 2020. The first thing we noticed are the improvements in the audio and the usability of the Smart and in general. The quality of your images depends largely on your X1 Ultimate which offers great native 4K UHD performance and pretty good with lower quality content. The Sony XH9505 adjusts the brightness of the image to the brightness of the rooms and also adjusts the audio when detecting objects such as curtains or furniture. If you want to buy the Sony XH95 ahead, you are not wrong, but we recommend you compare it first with the LG OLED CX and the Samsung Q95T.

Sony XH8096 our buying advice (XH8077)

The Sony XH8096 is a good TV 2020. Like "all" current TVs includes SmartTV and 4K resolution. It is a not very cheap mid-range model, Sony is a brand a little more expensive than LG or Samsung. The panel is good, the Triluminos technology, but it is EdgeLED and with 50Hz refresh rate in 43 and 49 inches, the XH8505 model improves this data. The connections are good, the Smart works correctly and the Audio is 20W, as in almost all current LED TVs. The IPS panel improves the viewing angle but in contrast is somewhat worse than other panels, making it not the best TV for movies in the dark.

Our opinion about the Sony XH8096 is not entirely good, it is a lower-middle-range television, although it is sufficient for most normal television users, its price is somewhat higher than other similar quality / performance models from other good brands like LG. If you are looking for a TV to watch TV it is fine, but if you want a maximum angle of view and brightness in this category it is fine, but we do not recommend it for dark rooms since blacks look gray. The LG mid-range is similar and somewhat cheaper, on the other hand if you prefer to improve in contrast but lose angle of view we recommend you look at the Samsung TU8 series.

The Sony XG8396 is a mid-range model 2019-2020, it is the same TV as the XG8596 with the difference in size, this XG83 is only available in 43 and 49 inches, just like its big brother is compatible with 4K and HDR10. The panel is IPS so it is best to see in brightly lit rooms that look good both from the front and from the sides. The Smart is Oreo8 which is pretty good. Sony has prices for its mid-low range TVs too high in our opinion and although this has a good color with its panel Triluminos and native 100Hz is too expensive. The Sony XG8096 is a mid-low-end 2019 TV, one of the cheapest TVs with 4K-HDDR10 and SmartTV resolution that Sony offers for this year. In image quality it offers the typical colors of Sony, with its Triluminos screen. The technology is IPS so it is best to see in rooms with ambient light and offers a good viewing angle. The panel is 50Hz and EdgeLED is 49 and 43 inches and DirectLED is 55 and higher. DirectLED panels offer better panel uniformity. The Smart platform is fine, it is the same as the higher models. It has no dual tuner and the audio is somewhat inferior to the XG85 modleo since it does not include DolbyAtmos.

Our opinion Sony XG8096(veredict):

Our opinion of the Sony XG8096 is not good for the 43 and 49-inch models as the EdgeLEd panel and the 50Hz are features of low-end televisions. In addition the price of Sony TVs in this category are not so cheap with those of other brands such as LG that offer more for the same price. The main difference with the top models of the series 8 like the XG8596 is the 100Hz of the panel. Anyway it is a TV recommended for those who do not want to pay too much, have a TV compatible with the most common formats currently, enjoy a good Smart and who like the type of image offered by Sony TVs thanks to its Triluminos screen. Not recommended to watch movies in the dark.

Sony XG9005: Best 49 inches of 2019

The Sony XG9005 is a 2019 television that is only available in 49 inches. It's a very good TV, maybe the best 49 inches of the year, since the TOP models are not manufactured in less than 55. The resolution is of course 4K, compatible with HDR10 and also with DolbyVision.The X1 Extreme processor is good, but not the best of the moment that includes the superior model XG95.VAL FALD panel with 60 control zones allows a great contrast, deep blacks but a reduced viewing angle, so if you are going to watch the TV from the sides, this is not Your Sony TV does not include the X-Wide-Angle so it has a worse viewing angle, but the contrast remains very good since this technology to improve the angle and vision has a little effect on this aspect. Our opinion about the Sony XG9005 is good because it is for us the best 49-inch TV that can be purchased today. In any case, as we have already explained, it is a suitable television above all to see front, to reproduce any type of content, a good Smart platform, ... The dilemma that we face is whether it is better than the Sony XF9005 model of 2018, that being older is cheaper and the differences in image quality and design are tiny for any average user: Comparative XG9005 (2019) vs XF9005 (2019)
In general it is a very good option to choose this TV if you like to watch movies with good quality, TDT, gamers, sports, etc ... and you plan to spend more than ‎£800.

Sony AG8: Review Excellent OLED 2019-2020

The Sony AG8 TV is an OLED, one of the most recommended TVs of the year if we do not have the price in gutter. The image quality is excellent since it combines perfectly the image of an OLED panel: uniformity, excellent contrast, great viewing angle, with the careful and accurate colors of Sony. This TV is compatible with some of the best HDR formats: DolbyVision and of course with 4K resolution. The Smart is good although there is something behind LG or Samsung for us in ease of use. Audio is somewhat superior to the competition with Sony Acoustic Surface technology, which uses the screen as a vibrating surface for the speakers, but is not compatible with Atmos (only the AG9)

Our opinion Sony AG8 (veredict):

Our opinion about the Sony AG8 is very good, it is a TV designed to compete with the best TVs of the year from other brands such as the Samsung Q90R or the LG C). OLED technology is ideal for watching movies in the dark while maintaining an excellent image although we see it from the sides. A good Smart, good functionality for video games and compatibility with the best current formats make it an excellent high-priced TV, so if your budget is not high you should look for alternatives not OLED or wait for an offer.

Alternatives to Sony AG8:
LG OLED C9: Similar in everything, the price similar to the AG8, something better the Smart.
Samsung Q90R: Brighter but with slightly less viewing angle, like the LG something better the Smart and a similar price
Sony OLED AG9: the older brother, shares most specifications, but has a higher processor and more powerful audio compatible with Atmos. More expensive.

Sony OLED AG9: the best image and best sound 2019

The Sony AG9 is a TV OLED 2019, this TV is the best that Sony presents for this year. The image quality is excellent and its sound stands out above the competition. The screen offers excellent uniformity and a wide viewing angle, with 4K resolution and a good HDR: compatible with HDR10 and DolbyVision. The Smart platform is good, it works on Android, but for us it is one point behind LG or Samsung in this aspect. It should be added that it is recommended for gamers and that its AcusticSurface audio system with Atmos compatibility makes it the best TV audio of the moment.

Our opinion Sony AG9 (veredict):

Our opinion about the Sopny OLED AG9 is very good, excellent as long as we do not consider the price. Its processor handles the images perfectly and the details are excellent. A TV ideal for all uses: cinema, sports, for light or dark situations, wide viewing angle. In short, we can say that if you buy this TV, you are not wrong, but you have to pay for the heat, which is not bad. The best thing that Sony has evolved is in the design, it has returned to normal since in 2018 it "flip" with a design too innovative that did not allow to hang the TV on the wall.

Alternatives to Sony AG9:
Sony OLED AG8: the great alternative, it shares the majority of specifications, something worse in Audio and a somewhat less powerful processor but lower price.
LG OLED C9: Similar in everything but audio, the price similar to the AG8, something better the Smart. Price as the AG8 (about £400 less than the AG9)
Samsung Q90R: Brighter but with slightly less angle of view, with the LG something better the Smart and a price £400 cheaper than the AG9

Comparison Sony XG9005 XF9005: Which is better?

• The new equivalent 2020 TV is the Sony XH9005

The televisions of Sony XF9005 and XG9005 are the same version of different years. We consider the XF90 it last year as the best quality-price TV of the year, in the medium-high range. The XG9005 is the evolution with few significant differences.

The first thing is that the screen size of the new model is only available in 49 ", so if you are looking for a TV of 55" or more you must choose between the XF9005 or the superior model of this year XG9505 (more expensive).

The HDR image quality depends partly on the processor, both have a good brightness level and the 4K HDR X1 Extreme processor. Both are compatible with HDR10 and DolbyVision.

Price:
The price of 49 inches (if you find it on offer) of the Sony XG9005 is over ‎£1000 and the Sony XF9005 over ‎£8500, a difference paid for the novelty, not the difference in image quality.

Conclusion:

The panel is VA FALD with native 100Hz in both models, compatible with some of the best HDR formats, good contrast, better to see front etc. They are two very good televisions for the price they have, very similar and seeing them side by side we are not able to notice the difference. We would buy the XF9005 and save those ‎£150 for a good sound bar.

Sony XG8505: our opinion (XG8596)

The Sony XG8505 is a mid-high-end model 2019-2020, is a 4K TV compatible with HDR and all current high-quality content. As technical aspects we can highlight that it is an LCD-LED is EdgeLED Local Dimming 100Hz. The 100Hz is the best of the moment, ideal for scenes with fast movements such as action movies or sports, against the EdgeLED is for us a bit lower than DirectLED TVs that present greater uniformity, but is only available in high-end models . The panel is 8Bits + FCR (simulates 10bits) to improve the range of colors, makes it compatible with HDR formats but is not a 10-bit panel. The panel type and Triluminos technology offers acceptable natural and black colors, the viewing angle is good. The Sony XG8505 has all the tuners and connectors needed today. Sony continues, for years now that incorporates, the Android Smart platform, this year Oreo, which promises to be faster than the previous Android Smart, works well but is not better than the LG or Samsung platforms.

• The worst: EdgeLED, price, minimum 55 inches.

Our opinion about the Sony XG8505 is not good at all because of its limited contrast, it is not a bad TV but for the price it presents is not the best TV we can buy if we want to watch movies in the dark. On the contrary it is ideal for gamers because of its low inputlag, to watch sports or for salons with sofas on the sides, ... Returning to the price is a good TV for most, perhaps too expensive for those who only want a current TV with SmartTV, compatible with high resolution formats. This models only available from 55 inches, a large screen. The model 2018 XF9005 has a similar price and is better for cinema because of its better level of blacks.

Sony XG9505: Best Sony LED-TV 2019

The Sony XG9505 is a high-end television wing sold in 2019. This model presents a very good image quality, one of the best TV of the year. The panel is VA FALD, which indicates that it has one of the best contrasts and deep blacks (without reaching the level of the OLED) combined with a high peak brightness that allows you to play excellent HDR (compatible with DolbyVision). The image processor is the Ultimate X1, the best of Sony. As it happens in all VA panels it is more suitable to see front than from the sides. The response time for gamers is good too. Smart Android improves, is faster and more stable, each time a little closer to the best Smart platforms of Samsung and LG. Audio is fine, but it is not up to the quality of the image, so if you want a small home theater you should buy an external Audio system. There is a difference between the screen sizes that is remarkable, the X-Wide Angle from 75in improves the angle of vision, but it hurts a little to the contrast.

Our opinion Sony XG9505 (veredict):

Our opinion about the Sony XG9505 is very good for its excellent image quality we like for all uses, sports, games, movies, ... the negative point is as always in the LCD-LED with VA panel viewing angle . The control by zones allows to illuminate areas of the screen and improve the details, these 60 zones are far from the best QLED Q90R that controls some 480 zones. The brightness of the panel allows it to compete with the best in HDR, ideal for new 4K high quality content, but it can not compete with the viewing angles of OLEDs, even LG's IPS. Our advice is to buy the Sony XG9505 if you are looking for the best to watch quality movies / content but mainly to see front.

Both TVs are TOP 2019 models, the best you can buy this year. They share most specifications: OLED, 4K, good Smart, HDR10, DolbyVision, ... These Sony 2019 TOP TVs offer the best picture quality of the moment.

The main difference is that the Sony AG8 is a cheaper model with a less powerful video processor and without Dolby Atmos support.
